Welcome

What’s in a Year?
WOW! That’s what best describes how fast and how incredible this year has been for the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs’ Association. Our legislative accomplishments have been exceptional. Due to the participation of our board and our membership and the efforts of Legislative Liaison Chief Dave Bloom we have enjoyed the fruits of several years of work. These fruits include:
- Volunteer firefighters now have job protection.
- Carbon monoxide detectors are required in multifamily and single family homes.
- Collapse Rescue Teams are enabled by state law.
- The Emergency Management Statute has been revised.
- Fire Act Funding was restored to budgeted levels.
- SAFER Grant changes occurred to benefit Wisconsin communities.
Together we can make a difference!
Our accomplishments don’t stop there. We are working hard with the Department of Commerce on issues with the Fire Inspection and 2% Dues program. We have established quarterly communication meetings to collaboratively problem solve issues that affect the Wisconsin Fire Service.
We are forging ahead leading the Wisconsin Fire Service in being an agent for change with the Wisconsin Technical College System Fire Service Advisory Board. We have provided leadership and guidance for all facets of Fire Service Training and Education. Your voices are being heard and the Wisconsin Fire Service will have greater responsibility and influence on fire service training well into the future.
Although in its infancy, the Wisconsin State Fire Service Training Academy is alive and well. The educational offering committee is drafting an educational program schedule that with thrust the Academy into the forefront of fire service leadership training within the state. I encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity to attend this inexpensive training. Watch for postings.
The WSFCA wants to help everyone coordinate regional and local events with a Wisconsin Fire Service Calendar. A calendar will be maintained on behalf of all fire service organizations in Wisconsin on a separate website and a link from your association to the calendar will be made available. Watch for details on how to post and access information on the calendar.
I want to thank our Board of Directors for a dedicated year of service. Glenn, Jack B. Doug, Jack R., Dave, Tim, Ed King, Ed Kassing, Paul, and Jim have tackled many complicated issues and exercised influence on behalf our membership. I encourage you to consider stepping up to serve on the board. I want to thank Jane and the SAMI staff for helping the WSFCA run like a well oiled machine. I want to thank the membership for the opportunity to serve as your President it has been an honor. I want to thank my department staff Assistant Chief Tim Curtis, Deputy Chief Bryan Northrop, Deputy Chief Bruce Hedrington, Business Services Coordinator Antonia Vargas, and Administrative Assistants Debbie Rykowski and Lisa Rath for keeping the ship afloat when I was away on WSFCA business. Finally, I want to thank my wife, Karen and our kids Brandon, Ben, Nick, Kaitlyn and Mary for her faithful support and patience throughout the year. When you serve on the board your family serves also and I appreciate my family’s contribution in allowing me the time to serve all of you.
Thank you for a great year!
